Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. presented three $1,000 scholarships to local female students on May 7.
The awards were given out during the sorority’s annual May Week program. During that time, the organization traditionally recognizes member accomplishments and presents scholarships.
Delta gave a scholarship to one student at each of the city’s public high schools.
The winners include:
Ariel S. James, Nansemond River High School, who will be attending Norfolk State University. She is planning to major in biology and eventually become an obstetrician.
Belleine Najacque, Lakeland High School, who will be studying engineering at Virginia Tech. She plans to become aerospace engineer.
Rahina S. Rabiu, King’s Fork High School, will study chemistry and pre-med at Norfolk State University. She wants to become a pharmacist.
The three students were selected because they have been active in their community, church/mosque, and school while pursuing challenging courses of study.
Vicki Wiggins-Pittman is president of the Suffolk alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Joyce J. Diggs is chair of the scholarship committee.
