A Suffolk couple’s home sustained major damage in a blaze Sunday morning.

Firefighter’s were called to 138 Beechwood Drive at 7:34 a.m. and found heavy fire in the rear of the house, owned by Stuart and Nancy Peace. The fire was under control by 8:12 a.m.

The kitchen, den and breakfast room were gutted, said Capt. James Judkins, spokesman for the Suffolk Fire Department.

Damage to the home, valued at $169,000, was reported at $70,000, and it will cost $20,000 to replace contents. Both the home and contents were insured.

The couple and their 19-year-old granddaughter escaped the fire. Nancy Peace was taken to Obici Hospital for a medical evaluation. Her injuries were not life threatening.

According to the investigative report, Peace was cooking bacon when she heard a loud &uot;pop.&uot; She immediately summoned her husband and granddaughter, both of whom were sleep, out of the house.

Ronald Hatfield, assistant chief of the Holland Volunteer Fire Department, made the 911 call after seeing flames coming from the house.

The Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad, Holland Volunteer Fire Department and Dominion Dominion Power joined Suffolk firefighters at the scene.
