Girl Scout coffee set

A coffee for Girl Scout mothers and other interested persons will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Parish House of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Mothers of first graders who want to be Brownies next year are especially invited to attend.

The purpose of the affair will be to present the new program change in Girl Scouting which will go into effect in the fall of 1963.

Mrs. Moody E. Stallings, executive director, will present the program and Mrs. Thomas H. Birdsong III and Mrs. Colin Davis are in charge of arrangements.

Godwin, Ray named directors of NF&D

Lt. Gov. Mills E. Godwin and John E. Ray III are among five newly elected directors of the Norfolk, Franklin and Danville Railway Co.

Charles G. Hammond Jr. was re-elected vice president of the railroad and general manager.

Hammond’s office, the general offices of the NF&D, are in Suffolk. He lives in Franklin.

Bill Chambers, basketball coach at the College of William and Mary, will be the instructor at a basketball school sponsored by the Suffolk Recreation Board June 10-14 for boys between the ages of 13 to 18. Boys who have completed high school will not be permitted to enroll.

Chambers, a former basketball star at William and Mary, has enjoyed considerable success as a coach in both high school (Newport News) and at William and Mary.

The school will be for both junior high school age and senior high boys. Boys 13 to 15 will be in one group. Each group will be under instruction three hours each day.

A banquet for the boys and their parents is planned for Thursday, June 13, and all-star games are planned for Friday night, June 14, to conclude the school.

Fifty boys will be the maximum accepted for the week due to facilities and personnel, Recreational Director Howard Mast said, so it is important that applications be made early for the school.

Elks minstrel opens two day run at palace

Suffolk Elks will open a two-night run tonight at the Palace Theater with their annual charity minstrel show.

Curtain time is 8 p.m., with all net proceeds going to the lodge’s camp fund.

The minstrel-which already has given a performance in Franklin-again features singing with the 40-member chorus contributing 11 of the musical numbers. Variety acts will be supplied by Loretta Cochran of Norfolk.
