Halloween might be right around the corner, but the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society is getting in the mood for the most wonderful time of the year.
For the third year, the organization is kicking off the holiday season early with its Wreath and Greens fundraiser. People can purchase a variety of wreaths and garland to use as holiday decorations. Monday is the last day to place orders, and they will arrive on Dec. 2.
Sue Woodward, a volunteer with the Historical Society, said the fundraiser is part of the group’s other holiday celebrations, specifically the Candlelight Tour, but the group uses the money all year long.
“(The sale) raises funds for operations of the Historical Society in general,” she said.
Some of the things the group uses the money for include keeping the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum open and printing their quarterly publication.
Woodward said the group hopes to raise about $1,500 from the sale.
The society has a variety of items for sale, including traditional and modern wreaths as well as different lengths of garland. The greenery used for the products is grown in the mountains of North Carolina.
“I think they are exceptionally beautiful,” Woodward said.
Wreaths range from $15 to $25, and garland starts at $18 and goes up to $65.
Woodward said the Historical Society hopes to get community support from the sale.
“We feel like the work we do at the Historical Society is beneficial to the city,” she said. “This is one more way to support it. They’ll have beautiful decorations on their home while supporting a good cause.”
Order forms are available at the Seaboard Station. Forms and checks can be mailed to the Historical Society or dropped off at the Seaboard Station.
