Suffolk police issued a summons to a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals employee at the scene of a hog truck wreck on Tuesday.
Kent Stein, 25, was summonsed at the scene for a misdemeanor charge of crossing an established police line.
Stein was videotaping the actions of workers at the scene who were attempting to herd the hogs into a replacement truck to carry them to their destination.
“We believe the charge is completely unwarranted,” said Lori Kettler, an attorney for PETA. “We’re confident it will be dropped.”
Kettler said employees of the organization regularly visit accident scenes involving animals to document the treatment of the animals.
“There’s a history by both the company and local law enforcement to keep PETA from filming what happens to these animals as a result of these crashes,” Kettler said. “Our position is the public has a right to see and to film what happens to these animals.”
Kettler said Stein was standing in the same area as members of the media as well as the general public.
“We’re confident those charges will be dropped based on the evidence we’ve seen,” Kettler said.
City spokeswoman Debbie George said Stein was warned before the actual summons was issued.
