Suffolk firemen fight meal blaze
Suffolk firemen fought a stubborn blaze nearly five hours today in the feed building at the Suffolk Oil Mills in East Suffolk where four bins of peanut meal caught fire last night.
At the oil mill this morning Capt. V. E. Jones, of the Suffolk Fire Department, said spontaneous combustion was the probable cause of the fire.
L. M. Caulk, president of the company, expressed doubt about spontaneous combustion since it has never caused a fire during the forty years he has been with the company.
Jones explained said the fire started deep in the piles of peanut meal stored in the bins and worked its way to the top.
Suffolk police noticed smoke pouring from the eaves of the building’s second floor while patrolling at 6:45 a.m. and notified the Fire Department.
Jones said when firemen arrived, automatic sprinkler had poured gallons of water on the fire already.
&uot;Evidently, it started sometime during the night but was not noticed until this morning.&uot;
