Isle of Wight County Schools this week announced nearly $100,000 in grants to help the division boost graduation rates and prepare its students for college and careers.

Opportunity, Inc., a Norfolk-based nonprofit, has committed $98,000 through the Workforce Investment Act In-School Youth Program.

Of that total, $10,000 will be used to support dual enrollment courses in science, technology, engineering and math.

“Taking dual credit courses gives students a head start on college,” said Katrise Perera, division superintendent. “In many cases, students are able to earn a year’s worth of college credits or a technical certificate by the time they graduate from high school.”

The courses will be delivered in partnership with a local community college or public university. Participating students will receive college credit when they successfully complete the course. Seniors on track to earn their diploma or GED within one year will be eligible to participate.

In addition, a three-tiered program will be implemented using an $88,000 grant to allow students opportunities in career exploration and immersion, academic preparation and summer internships. Highlights include field trips to various local employers, dual enrollment in college coursework, and paid and unpaid internships. High school juniors and seniors on track to graduate or receive their GED within two years will be eligible to participate.

“It is much less expensive for students to take these classes while they are still in high school,” said Lynn Briggs, executive director for education services.

A committee of administrators, teachers, and community members is currently reviewing the dual credit and dual enrollment program to identify more opportunities for students to earn dual credit.
