Nansemond River won its fifth straight boys volleyball match and sealed a winning Southeastern District record for the season with a Senior Night victory, 25-19, 25-16, 25-15, over King’s Fork Thursday night.

Led by 6-foot-6 John Joyce spiking for 11 kills, all of the Warrior hitters were in good form. Nansemond River (11-7, 10-7) is playing its best volleyball all the way around with one match left to play before going into the six-school Southeastern District Tournament in a little more than a week.

King’s Fork answered the Warriors early in the opening set. The Bulldogs gained a 13-10 lead with a 9-4 run.

Joyce scored back-to-back kills to bring the Warriors within a point. The Warriors kept the rally going on Tyler Brown’s service, all the way to a 21-13 NR lead.

The Warriors put down 14 kills in the opening set, led by Zach Vann’s five. Brown had 10 assists in the first set.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the second set. A.J. Jenkins led KF’s attacking at the net with Richie Parks doing the setting.

NR’s basketball recruits, Joyce and Michael Copeland, led the Warriors back in a hurry. The Warriors outscored KF 13-3 to take a 17-10 lead.

Joyce and Copeland combined for nine kills in the set. Parks had seven assists and Jenkins scored five kills for the Bulldogs in the set, but Nansemond River’s steady attack prevailed.

The Warriors made the third set the easiest of the evening. Brown finished with 24 assists. Vann had nine kills and Copeland had eight kills.

King’s Fork (4-18, 2-15) has its Senior Night match on Tuesday, hosting Great Bridge at 7 p.m.

The Warriors win the Suffolk city crown with a 4-0 record over King’s Fork and Lakeland. NR lost one set in its four city rivalry matches.

Nansemond River finishes its regular season at Western Branch on Tuesday. The Warriors beat the Bruins in five sets in their first meeting this season.
