Nansemond River fired four shots into Oscar Smith’s goal in the first 10 minutes and went on to an easy 8-0 win, with the mercy rule cutting off the last 15 minutes of the match, in a Southeastern District field hockey match Wednesday evening at Nansemond River.

Nansemond River’s quick 4-0 lead came out of only seven shots on goal. Shelbi Holloman led the onslaught by hammering two big shots into the back of the Lady Tiger cage, one exactly 2 minutes into the match and the second coming in the sixth minute.

The Lady Warriors moved the ball nearly at will in the opening half. Off a penalty corner, Sarah Lanthorn and Jordan Morris passed sharply to set up Holloman. Holloman received a pass from Morris, played the ball back to Morris, who dished to Holloman again for an open blast from the top of the arc.

Markelle Patterson swiped a backhanded shot from six yards off the goal line, coming off a rebound and through lots of traffic in front, for a 3-0 lead a minute later.

Morris went ahead and took her own shot for a goal in the 10th minute, coming after fast play from Kimberly Bates and Patterson led to another attack in the Oscar Smith arc.

The visitors, already with only one sub on the bench, had a defender take a blasted Lady Warrior shot to the knee during the first half, putting the Lady Tigers down to no reserves. To make matters worse, the Lady Tiger goalie played through being clearly ill.

NR head coach Ali Mowry moved players to experimental positions and gave her starters plenty of rest soon after building the 4-0 lead.

Mary Gover scored in the 25th and 28th minutes around Amber Daubenspeck scoring in the 26th minute, adding up to a 7-0 Lady Warrior lead at halftime.

Nansemond River’s starting goalie, Lindsey Hunter, scored more goals than the shots she had to save in the opening half.

Hunter played center midfield in the second half and backhanded in a pass from Daubenspeck for a goal eight minutes into the half for the final 8-0 margin.

With a rainout postponing last Wednesday’s district date at Indian River, it had been two weeks since the Lady Warriors (6-2, 4-2) saw live action.

Playing only 45 minutes and being able to cruise through most of the way against the Lady Tigers sets up the Lady Warriors well for a match Thursday night, at 7 p.m., at Granby.
