Chancey Leslie “Les” Griggs Sr. passed away Monday, October 3, 2011. He was born in Gates County, N.C., on Oct. 11, 1933. He was the son of the late Ocie Lee Griggs and Carrie Whitehurst Griggs. He was a member of Holy Neck United Church of Christ. He was retired from the Ford Motor Company Norfolk Assembly Plant after 38 years. He was also a member of UAW Local 919, Kings Fork Ruritan Club and VFW Post 2582.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marie Jordan Griggs. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Myrtle G. Flower, Virginia G. Speight, Mildred M. Burnett, and brothers, Charles H. Griggs and Thomas E. Griggs, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He is survived by a son, Chancey Leslie Griggs Jr.; daughters, Alice Faye Stafford, Cynthia G. Barbour (Charles) and Linda G. Hight (Eric); three granddaughters, Jessica B. Raines (Jay), Amanda K. Barbour and Danielle N. Stafford; and two great-grandchildren, Hailey A. Raines and Nathan Thomas Barbour. He is also survived by a brother, Joseph L. Griggs (Emma), and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at 11 a.m. in the R. W. Baker & Company Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, Va., by the Rev. Michael D. Halley, followed by entombment at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.
