Firefighters were at Kilby Shores Elementary School before 3 p.m. Monday to check on a report of smoke coming from a ceiling.

Students were evacuated from the building, but administrators have allowed fifth-graders back into their mobile units and all other grades into the gymnasium while firefighters continue to check the building, schools spokeswoman Bethanne Bradshaw said.

Backpacks are being gathered so students can dismiss as close to the regular 3:15 p.m. time as possible, Bradshaw added.
