With dramatic comeback rallies in the opening set and the final set, Greenbrier Christian remained perfect, going to 10-0, on the girls volleyball season at Nansemond-Suffolk’s expense with a 26-24, 19-25, 14-25, 25-22, 16-14 victory.
In the Tidewater Conference opener for the Lady Gators and Lady Saints, Greenbrier turned around an 18-4 Lady Saint lead to win the first set.
In the tiebreaker set, NSA rolled off a 10-1 run to take a 12-7 lead. The Lady Saints were two points from the win, at 13-9, before the hosts won five of the last six points in an energized home gym to take the match.
NSA (12-5, 0-1) was without two of its top players last week. Setter Quinby Hines was back in the lineup and tallied 29 assists. NSA’s top hitter, Tori Dail, was still forced to watch from the bench against the Lady Gators.
For much of the match, such as the first 22 points of the night, the Lady Saint attack didn’t seem to miss a beat.
NSA scored nine straight points on a service run by Hines for a 10-2 lead, then six straight with Kaylor Nash serving to make it 18-4. Hines set up four kills by Nash early on and got Morgan Daughtry and Breanna Barbeau involved in the hitting as well.
The Lady Gators stormed back and took the lead at 22-21. Nash hit a kill off a Greenbrier blocker to fight off a set point and make it 24-24. Lady Gator kills on the next two points sealed the huge rally.
NSA regrouped from the awful ending to the opening set and had little problem in the next two sets.
A run of strong hitting by Nash and Barbeau took NSA to a 16-13 lead in the second set. Lizzy Fowler’s block made it 19-15 NSA.
Hines and Nash combined on four straight NSA points, with Nash getting two spikes off Hines assists and Hines serving two aces, taking a 20-18 score to 24-18.
Daughtry hit back-to-back kills for a 9-7 lead in the third set. NSA continued the rally to 12-7 and led comfortably the rest of the set.
The Lady Saint attack returned to coming and going through the last two sets. It was good enough to roll off four straight points and take a 15-14 lead in the fourth set.
NSA serving errors, plus Lady Gator hitting gathering momentum, meant NSA’s 4-0 run was erased by Greenbrier’s 4-0 run. The Lady Gators took the fourth set and led 6-2 in the tiebreaker.
A kill by Barbeau gave NSA a needed sideout. NSA made it 6-6 with a diving dig by Nash leading to Hines setting and Daughtry putting the point away. It was Hines to Barbeau for a kill on the next point. NSA kept rolling to a 12-7 lead.
There was still time for another sudden 180-degree change. From a 13-9 NSA lead, Greenbrier won the next five points. NSA mishits gave the Lady Gators a 14-13 lead.
After Greenbrier missed a serve, the Lady Saints put a hit into the net and a Lady Gator spike won the final point.
Nash led the Lady Saints with 14 kills and six aces. Hines had five aces, along with her setting numbers.
The Lady Saints host Roanoke’s North Cross Friday at 4 p.m. Tidewater Conference play continues for NSA on Tuesday at Walsingham.
