Cavs build team midseason

With help from two players Lakeland didn’t have on the court the first time it took on King’s Fork this volleyball season, the Cavaliers cruised to a season sweep over the Bulldogs, winning 25-15, 25-22, 25-19, at King’s Fork’s Kennel Tuesday night.
With the Cavaliers (4-7) entering the second half of their district schedule, Tyler Mizelle, a major contributor for the Cavs for the past couple seasons, was playing in his first match of the season due to suffering a broken ankle on the second day of preseason practice.
“It’s always positive to see a kid work and come back strong from an injury like that,” said Lakeland head coach Daniel Waller.
The second new Cavalier truly is a new, midseason recruit.
Rodney Goodman is a standout forward for Lakeland’s basketball squad. A couple weeks into joining Lakeland’s volleyball team, he’s using his same athletic skills at, or actually well above, the volleyball net.
Volleyball coaches usually like getting help from their school’s basketball program. Goodman’s meant more to the Cavaliers, though, than just being a big leaper.
“He’s been a true asset to the team,” Waller said, “with his attitude, then his height and athletic ability. He’s given us another offensive threat.”
Goodman led the Cavalier attack in sweeping King’s Fork, putting down 11 kills. His addition helps Lakeland in another key way.
Mike Estienne was Lakeland’s main setter for two seasons going into this year but was needed as much or more as a hitter earlier this season.
Against King’s Fork, Estienne set when he was needed in that job and hit when that’s what the action called for. Seth Fisher set for eight assists and Estienne added seven assists along with kills and aces
King’s Fork (3-13, 1-10) were right within striking distance of taking either or both of sets two and three. Lakeland came up with the steadier play during the closing points in each set, though, including turning around a Bulldog lead, which lasted until an 18-17 KF lead, in the last set.
The first cycle through the district schedule, Lakeland beat Deep Creek and King’s Fork before dropping matches to the remaining seven district mates. The Cavaliers host Western Branch Thursday in the last match of a tripleheader.
The Bulldogs travel to play Hickory Thursday at 7 p.m.
