Virginia State beat CIAA foe Chowan 35-20 on Saturday in Ettrick.
Senior Francisco Clifford (King’s Fork) is the starting center on the Trojan offensive line.
Clifford, now a 265-pound lineman, was a two-way lineman for four varsity seasons for King’s Fork, going back to being a freshman in KF’s inaugural campaign in 2004. Clifford was the only Bulldog to letter each of the first four seasons of King’s Fork football.
Virginia State (2-2) hosts a CIAA contest against Bowie St. Saturday at 6 p.m.
True freshman George Riddick (King’s Fork) made two tackles in seeing action in his second career game for Norfolk State as the Spartans crushed Charleston Southern 33-3 in Charleston, S.C. on Saturday.
The Spartans held the Buccaneers to 55 rushing yards and 86 passing yards. NSU (3-1, 1-0 MEAC) has held opponents to 5.0 points per game in its three victories. NSU’s lone loss was at West Virginia.
Riddick, listed at 6-foot-2, 290 pounds and an offensive lineman, has made tackles on the defensive side in both games he’s played in.
The Spartans host MEAC rival South Carolina St. on Saturday at 4 p.m.
No. 1 Old Dominion cruised through its first weekend of in-conference field hockey play with a 5-0 win over Hofstra on Friday night in Norfolk followed with a 6-2 win over No. 20 Northeastern on Sunday.
Freshman midfielder Kelsey Smither (Lakeland) contributed her seventh assist of the season for one of the goals in the Hofstra match.
The Lady Monarchs (10-0, 2-0 Colonial) go out of conference to travel and face Richmond on Friday.
Radford senior defender Lynsey Daughtrey (Lakeland) scored a penalty stroke for the Lady Highlanders
but it wasn’t quite enough as Appalachian State won 3-2 at Radford on Friday in a NorPac Conference field hockey match.
Daughtrey’s goal, her second of the season, cut ASU’s lead to a goal with just under 10 minutes left.
Radford (4-5, 0-1) faces conference and in-state rival Longwood Tuesday night in Farmville.
