Inspired by viral video

Even with all sorts of depraved things going on in the world, every once in a while, something comes along to remind us that there are actually good people in the world.
That happened to me a couple weeks ago, when I was inspired by seeing the video of a group of strangers teaming up to lift a burning car off of a motorcyclist after an accident.
The accident happened in Logan, Utah, near the Utah State University campus. Chris Garff shot a video — apparently from several floors up in a building near the road — while the scenario played out.
The video begins just after the accident, when the group of bystanders realize there’s someone trapped under the car. That person was 21-year-old college student Brandon Wright, who had been driving the motorcycle.
The Associated Press reported he had been heading to a school computer lab when a BMW pulled out of a parking lot in front of him. He skidded underneath the car, and both vehicle burst into flames.
About a dozen onlookers — including construction workers, a man carrying a backpack, a woman in flip-flops (my personal favorite, since I always wear flip-flops) and others — banded together to lift the car, ignoring the flames, heat and smoke pouring from the fire and the possibility of a gas-fueled explosion at any moment. It takes them several tries, but once the passenger side of the car is in the air, one man pulls the injured motorcyclist — left foot aflame — from beneath the BMW. All that’s left for the police officers to do is spray the car with fire extinguishers.
The video got a lot of play on news channels, websites, blogs and YouTube. The town of Logan is attempting to track down all the rescuers so it can reward them for their selfless behavior. The victim is reported to be recovering from his injuries.
The video, to me, demonstrated everything that is good about America — people helping other people, no matter what it might cost them; strangers banding together for a common cause; and countless others being inspired by the courageous acts of a few.
It’s exactly the sort of thing that might happen in Suffolk if needed, this being the same Suffolk that, three years ago, was nationally recognized for its ability to come together to recover from the tornado that ripped apart hundreds of homes and businesses.
If you haven’t watched the video, I encourage you to do so. Searching “Bystanders pull man from fiery crash” will bring it up. And after you’ve watched it, remember it as you go throughout your day. Someone might need your help — but, I hope, not in as dramatic a fashion.
