Suffolk Executive Airport hosted the Virginia Regional Festival of Flight on Saturday and Sunday, with dozens of airplanes and hundreds of pilots, aviation enthusiasts and people just curious about the hobby either flying in or driving in for a look.

There were presentations and workshops for pilots and builders. There were hands-on activities for kids. NASA was on hand to show off some new technology and to help develop an interest in science in the children who were attending the show.

There was a flight simulator, and those attending could watch members of Hampton Model Club fly radio-controlled airplanes above one of the fields surrounding the runways at SFQ, as the Suffolk airport is known by pilots.

But the stars of the show were the full-sized aircraft. There were airplanes of just about every classification on hand, parked along the sides of runways and taxiways and on the grass of the infields.

Whether visitors were interested in the latest in private aviation or some of history’s favorite warbirds, they were sure to be pleased at what they could find along the tarmac. There were aircraft with multiple engines, aircraft with no engines and even a couple of aircraft that were not meant to fly. A pilot with enough interest and a large enough checking account could even fly away in a new airplane of his own, as aircraft dealers were on hand showing their wares.
