Lakeland game cancelled

Lakeland High School announced late Friday that all afternoon activities had been cancelled, including the evening’s football game.

According to Suffolk Public School spokesperson Bethanne Bradshaw, the cancellation was weather-related.

Storms were passing through Suffolk all Friday afternoon, with little relief expected through the evening. The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for parts of northern Suffolk, Isle of Wight and Newport News earlier in the afternoon, but that warning had expired by the time the announcement was made.

Neither Nansemond River nor King’s Fork high schools had made similar announcements by 5 p.m.

The Lakeland football game has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. Monday.
