3-0 Cavaliers return home

Lakeland’s Anaquan Peterson, left, and Jaylyn King celebrate a touchdown during Lakeland’s home opener three weeks ago against Deep Creek. The 3-0 Cavaliers host Western Branch in a Southeastern District game Friday at 7 p.m.

Western Branch (1-2, 1-1) at Lakeland (3-0, 2-0) – 7 p.m.

Last year – Western Branch 36, Lakeland 19

Even without their starting quarterback for most of the game, the Cavaliers put up a ton of points again last Friday night.

Lakeland placekicker Evan Worley booted five extra points last Friday in Lakeland’s 47-21 win at Maury. The Cavaliers are averaging 43 points per game in their three victories. Lakeland hosts Western Branch tonight at 7 p.m.

Running back Raekwon Johnson moved to quarterback when Zach Super got injured. Johnson completed three touchdown passes, 8-for-13 passes in all, as the Cavs were still able to get the ball out to speedsters Antonio Jefferson and Anaquan Peterson. By the way, Johnson still rushed for three touchdowns, giving him eight on the ground in three games.

The Commodores gave the Cavs their first close game of the season, but it was still a Lakeland blowout by the fourth quarter.

The Bruins come in off a 35-34, double-overtime loss to Hickory. Lakeland beat Hickory 41-15 two Fridays ago.

WB running back Josh Marriner carried for three touchdowns against Hickory.

While Lakeland’s offense is averaging 43 points per game, the Cavalier defense has held Maury to seven rushing yards, Hickory to -4 rushing yards and Deep Creek to 17 rushing yards.

Oscar Smith (2-1, 2-0) at Nansemond River (2-1, 1-1) – 7 p.m.

Last year – Oscar Smith 50, Nansemond River 0

The Warriors get Oscar Smith and the Tigers 39-game Southeastern District winning streak coming off a very short week as the Tigers beat Indian River 41-14 Monday night.

NR senior LaMont Brown has back-to-back 200-plus yard games on the ground. Brown has carried for 548 yards and six touchdowns total.

Oscar Smith senior J.C. Coleman, a Virginia Tech commit, has 557 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. Tiger quarterback J.J. Williamson leads the district with 807 passing yards.

The Warriors scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 27-0 win at King’s Fork last week. NR’s defense claimed three interceptions and a fumble versus the Bulldogs, while also holding KF to 4-for-15 passing. Certainly Oscar Smith will be a major step up for the Warriors.

King’s Fork (1-2, 1-1) at Great Bridge (1-2, 0-2) – 7 p.m.

Last year – Great Bridge 35, King’s Fork 7

Thanks to a great fourth quarter two Fridays ago against Indian River, King’s Fork is still in the middle of the Southeastern standings, even though the Bulldogs haven’t scored in seven of their last eight quarters.

Great Bridge’s 0-2 district mark comes after facing Oscar Smith and Grassfield, so while the record doesn’t look like it now, the Wildcats are still a postseason-caliber team.

Grassfield beat Great Bridge 15-12 last Friday. GB senior Adriell Mayes carried 40 times for 215 yards against Oscar Smith.

Each time the Bulldogs were on the verge of a good drive last week, usually with a run from Charles Clark or Noah Johnson, a penalty brought the Bulldogs back.

Bishop Sullivan (3-1, 0-0) at Nansemond-Suffolk (0-3, 0-1) – 7 p.m.

Last year – Bishop Sullivan 30, Nansemond-Suffolk 16

Nansemond-Suffolk led Norfolk Christian 21-0 at halftime last Friday before the Ambassadors, with four players who will be Virginia Cavaliers this time next year, scored four touchdowns to win 28-21.

The Saints put up promising efforts, but a difficult schedule remains that way against the Crusaders.

Bishop Sullivan strung together wins against Isle of Wight, St. Anne’s-Belfield and Portsmouth Christian before losing to North Cross on Saturday. The Crusaders usually feature a strong mix of running and passing.

NSA allowed 298 passing yards versus 22 rushing yards against Norfolk Christian. Senior Bobby Lamm rushed for two of NSA’s three touchdowns.
