King’s Fork’s football game against Deep Creek Friday proved to be a dull one for Bulldogs fans, as the Hornets rolled to a 51-8 victory. With both teams racking up a total of 15 turnovers, neither had the chance for many big drives.

In the first half, the Creek running game was simply shut down by the Bulldogs. Led by big hits from junior Vernon Jackson and freshman Mike Mason, the King’s Fork defense dominated in the first half.

Despite the running losses, the Hornets offense had their strong passing game to carry them through the game. Deep Creek’s Morris Rivera led the offensive assault, scoring three of the five first-half touchdowns. The half ended with the Hornets ahead 35-0.

The second half began on the same negative note that had shown throughout the first. On its first drive, the Bulldog offense was moved back all the way to the endzone for a Hornets safety.

As the half progressed, the Bulldog defense continued to pressure Deep Creek quarterback Mike McCutcheon, holding the Hornets to 16 points.

In the final Bulldog drive of the game, Dan Miller stepped up to run for 70 yards. Then, with just 14 seconds left, the Bulldogs put up their first points of the game with a Miller five-yard run and successful two-point conversion.

&uot;This has never come up in practice, so I just don’t have an answer for it,&uot; Fork coach Cecil Phillips said of his team’s eight turnovers.

The coach is optimistically looking forward to the Bulldog’s next game at Wilson next Friday, though.

&uot;This is an opponent we can definitely compete with. This week we’re taking Monday off, then getting right back to the basics.&uot;
