On Sept. 15, 2011, Bettie Florence Cherry Harmon went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born on Sept. 18, 1942, to the late Hubert Glenn and Ethel Bazemore Cherry. She was reared in Windsor, N.C.
In 1960, she married Joe Louis Harmon Sr., and to this union eight children were born.
Bettie retired from Maryview Medical Center after 29 years of dedicated service. Bettie was a former member of New First Baptist Church Taylorsville in Portsmouth, Va. In 1996, she became a member of Grove Baptist Church, Portsmouth, Va.
Bettie was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Harmon, and her son, Jeffrey D. Harmon.
She leaves to cherish her memory four daughters, Linda A. Harmon Alisia Harmon Wallace (Tyrone), Patricia Harmon Hurdle and Cynthia Harmon Stovall (Altonie); three sons, Joe Harmon Jr. (Mary), Kevin Harmon and Travis Harmon Sr. (Kimberly); 22 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Gladys Hill, of Windsor, N.C., Rachel Kelly, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Fannie Mosley (Johnnie), of Ahoskie, N.C., and Willie Cherry, of Oxon Hill, Md., and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who loved her dearly.
A home going celebration will be held Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at noon in Grove Baptist Church, 5910 West Norfolk Road, Portsmouth, VA 23703. Dr. Melvin O. Marriner will officiate. Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk, Va. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, 1317 Gust Lane, Chesapeake, VA 23322, with Pastor Sammie L. Logan III.
