Parade starts Bowl fete

Twenty-one units, including six floats, two bands and the Suffolk-Nansemond Rescue Squad, have been lined up for tomorrow’s Peanut Bowl parade, Recreation Director Howard Mast announced today.

Included in the line of march will be convertibles bearing the mayor, president of the Rotary Club, coaches, captains, and the 1960 Peanut Bowl Queen.

Parade Marshall James C. Causey, Jr., traditionally mounted on his own horse, will head the procession, while the parade will be climaxes by the float bearing the 1961 Queen and her court.

Julane Speer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Speer has been selected this year’s Peanut Bowl Queen.

Members of her court are Rogie Coulbourn and Charnell Williams of Suffolk High and Anita Forbes and Mary Dunning of Churchland, which is the football opponent tomorrow night.

Other Peanut Bowl activities are a buffet supper honoring the Queen and her court to be held at Hotel Suffolk at 6 p.m. tomorrow, crowning of the Queen at 7:45 p.m., the game with Churchland at 8 p.m., and a dance at Birdsong Recreation Center following the game.

Pledge ritual held

A pledge ritual for five new members of the Suffolk chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority was conducted by Mrs. John Parker at a meeting last night at her home in Holland.

New members are Mrs. Ted Potter, Mrs. Randy Turner, Mrs. Bobby Draper, Mrs. Frank Wright and Mrs. A. B. Holland.

Mrs. Parker conducted the pledge ritual, assisted by Mrs. Curtis Williams, Jr., and Mrs. William Burkett.

The sorority voted to sponsor a float in the Retail Merchants Association parade Friday, Nov. 24.

Refreshments were served by Mrs. Parker and the co-hostesses Mrs. Thad Williams, Mrs. Burke and Mrs. A. M. McBride, Jr.
