Lady Warrior sisters spike Deep Creek

Sisters Courtney and Morgan Lowers clearly were on the same page for Nansemond River Thursday night as the Lady Warriors swept by visiting Deep Creek 25-11, 25-18, 25-18.
Courtney Lowers, a senior and longtime leader for the Lady Warriors, put down 19 kills, most of the powerful spike variety. Morgan, a freshman who’s taken up the primary setter position alongside her older sister, totaled 21 assists.
When Deep Creek threatened to take the third set and extend the match, the Lady Warriors knew how to finish the win, their second straight win after opening the season 0-7.
From a 14-13 Lady Hornet edge, Morgan set to Courtney for a big spike past two DC blockers. A block by Courtney put NR ahead by a point.
With Janeen Griffith serving what continued on as a long Lady Warrior rally, it was Morgan setting and Courtney spiking for four of the next five NR points.
Morgan threw Deep Creek something different, setting middle hitter Tatyana Thomas for back-to-back kills for a 22-14 Lady Warrior lead.
Deep Creek’s challenge late in the match was the biggest pressure Nansemond River faced all night.
The Lady Warriors rolled out to a 17-4 lead in the first set. Deep Creek gained a slim lead to start the second set.
An 8-0 run on Griffith’s serving, with a couple Griffith aces and a couple kills by C. Lowers in the streak, gave NR a 15-11 lead.
A lone Lady Hornet point interrupted the home team before six more NR points. Thomas, a tall and athletic sophomore at the center of the net for NR’s offense and defense, contributed kills and blocks as NR built its big lead.
“It’s all about momentum, and having confidence. We have younger players who are experiencing what it means to play at the varsity level for the first time and understanding what that takes versus JV,” said first-year Nansemond River head coach Deidra Rader.
“It’s beautiful to see everyone clicking more and more. We’re not making the unforced errors we were earlier, errors which were just because of a lack of confidence,” Rader said.
In the back-to-back wins this week, the Lady Warriors won six of seven sets versus Indian River and Deep Creek.
The Lady Warriors (2-7, 2-5) have two more district matches left in the first rotation through the Southeastern District schedule. Both Warrior volleyball teams play at King’s Fork on Monday starting at 5 p.m.
