Where the polls are and who is running for office

Published 12:00 am Sunday, November 6, 2005

As far as election days go, the national spotlight will be very dim this Tuesday in every state except Virginia and New Jersey, where voters will go to the polls to cast ballots in the only two gubernatorial races in the nation.

In Suffolk, approximately 20,000 people could make their choices, either in person or through absentee ballots.

There are 46,516 registered voters in the city. But if 2001 results, in which 43.3 percent of Suffolk’s registered voters participated, and the estimates from Suffolk’s voter registrar office are accurate, no more than half of those people will cast votes.

Slightly more than 500 absentee ballots have been distributed to Suffolkians according to the city’s registrar. That figure includes 162 ballots sent to Suffolk residents currently overseas. There is no record of that figure divided by foreign country.

There will be 22 polling stations in Suffolk open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday (number in parenthesis denotes the precinct’s House of Delegates district).
