The Warriors and Bulldogs put together huge comebacks last Friday evening.

Nansemond River fell just short, rallying from 16-0 down to Grassfield in the final quarter for a 16-13 loss.

King’s Fork trailed 16-0 at Indian River. Two touchdowns in the last 2:30 gave the Bulldogs a 19-16 win. Sophomore quarterback Uriah Adams and junior wingback Noah Johnson combined for a 60-yard touchdown reception with 0:35 left to put KF in front.

Last year’s Bulldog win in the city rivalry game is part of four wins in the last five contests for KF.

The Bulldogs forced four Warrior turnovers last November. Charles Clark carried for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Nansemond River’s defense held Wilson to a field goal and negative yards rushing to open the season. Grassfield, a 37-0 victor over NR in 2010, scored no points on offense after its first possession of last week’s game. NR held the Grizzlies to 95 total yards of offense.

NR senior running back LaMont Brown carried 40 times against the Grizzlies and has 351 rushing yards in two games.

The Bulldogs hold a 5-2 record in the rivalry and have won each contest since the 2006 season.

Lakeland (2-0, 2-0) at Maury (0-2, 0-0 Eastern) – 7 p.m. at Powhatan Field

Cavalier receiver/defensive back Antonio Jefferson has caught two touchdown passes in each of Lakeland’s two blowout victories. At the end of last Friday’s 41-15 romp at Hickory, Jefferson shared the credit with the Cavalier linemen.

Most of the Lakeland line goes both ways, so the big guys such as Chris Rodgers and Craig Taylor are providing the time for quarterback Zach Super, holes for running back Raekwon Johnson and stuffing the opposition’s offense.

Perhaps lost in Lakeland’s huge offensive numbers is the Cavalier defense dominance, with a Hickory safety as the only points, through the first seven quarters of the season before the Hawks scored two consolation touchdowns in the last few minutes last Friday.

Super has thrown for 554 yards and six touchdowns in two games. Johnson has 243 rushing yards with four rushing touchdowns and one TD receiving.

Norfolk’s Commodores lost 23-12 at Grassfield in week one and lost 38-8 at Woodside last Friday.

Norfolk Christian (1-1, 1-0) at Nansemond-Suffolk (0-2, 0-0) – 7 p.m.

The Saints are 4-0 all-time against Norfolk Christian, the youngest football member of the Tidewater Conference. NSA’s won the contests against the Ambassadors by a combined total of 117-12. Yet, the Saints will need a major upset to keep that streak going.

Norfolk Christian is led by four seniors who’ve committed to Virginia: linebacker Kwontie Moore, wide receiver Mario Nixon, defensive end Courtnye Wynn and running back/receiver Wilfred Wahee.

The Saints gave up 26 points in the second half to fall 33-0 to Christchurch last Friday. NSA’s allowed 56 of the 63 points it’s yielded after halftime.

The Ambassadors led Hampton Roads 48-0 at halftime last Friday and went on to a 55-0 win. The Ambassadors piled up 394 rushing yards on 27 plays.
