Bike West fundraising for Wounded Warriors

After collecting in-store donations for the past month, Bike West is taking its support to the streets.

The bike store is hosting a bike ride and a cookout at Nike Park in Smithfield Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to support the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 2 bike team and its efforts to raise funds for the Wounded EOD Warrior Foundation.

“Anything we can get from the community, whether its well wishes or donations, lets us keep moving forward with as much energy as we can,” said Sara Olsen, an EOD tech in the Navy Reserves who rides with EOD Group 2.

Registration is $20 for an individual or $40 for a family of four for the Nike Park event. Also, Bike West will raffle off a Trek Mountain Bike at the event. Raffle tickets are $5.

All the money raised will be donated to Wounded EOD Warrior Foundation.

The EOD Group 2 bike team is planning to ride in the Undefeated Wounded EOD Warrior Foundation Ride, which takes places Oct. 7-9 in California.

“We decided since it’s always been a West Coast ride, we wanted to get a big group from the East Coast to raise money,” said Sara Olsen, an EOD tech in the Navy Reserves.

Olsen and her teammates are the inspiration for the event, but the idea actually came from a teenage girl with a rare chromosome disorder looking to do the right things.

Jim Hazlitt, a Navy reservist who is in Olsen’s unit and works at Bike West, said Bike West agreed to sponsor Olsen’s team after she asked for the support.

The shop is providing bike tune-ups and uniforms for the ride, but Bike West also placed jars on its counter to help raise funds.

He said the donation jars got the attention of Maya Cross, a 13-year-old girl who was born with a rare chromosome disorder that limits her mobility, when she visited the shop to have Bike West build her a custom bike.

The jars inspired Maya, Hazlitt said.

“Maya said she didn’t want any birthday gifts. She wanted the money that would be spent on birthday gifts to be donated to Sara’s team,” he said.

Hazlitt said he was amazed by Maya’s kindness.

“That moved me,” he said. “It’s pretty impressive because there’s adults that wouldn’t even do that.”

Maya’s mother, Rainey Cross, wanted to take her daughter’s generosity to the next level and asked Hazlitt if they would hold an event to raise funds.

Hazlitt said they took the original fundraising idea and Rainey Cross’ request and put it together for the bike ride.

Olsen said she is touched by Maya’s wish to support her ride and the foundation.

“You’ve got somebody who has done nothing but overcome challenges her whole life and the most important thing for her birthday is to help others is really kind of amazing,” she said. “It’s amazing for a young lady to decide that’s what is important to her.”

To give back to Maya at the event, Bike West will present her with her custom-built bike for her birthday.
