Walter Daniel Jernigan

Walter Daniel Jernigan, 106, of the 1700 block of Holland Road, died Nov. 24, 2005 at Nansemond Pointe Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
Born Sept. 12, 1899 in Bertie Co. N.C., he came to Suffolk in 1948. He was the son of the late David and Ada Jernigan. Mr. Jernigan was a US Army WWI veteran. A retired barber of many years in Norfolk, Franklin, and Suffolk, he was the oldest member of Bethlehem Christian Church. He was predeceased by his siblings, Wright Jernigan, Jay Lester Jernigan, Bud Ed Jernigan, Evie Cherry and Ruth Warren, all of N.C. He was also predeceased by his former wife Virgie Kissell Jernigan and his daughter, Janice Hodges of Richmond.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 43 years, Ila Boyce Jernigan of Suffolk, daughters and sons-in-law, Gladys and Harold Becker of Eaton Rapids, ML, and Mary Agnes and Robert Byrd of Suffolk. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem Christian Church with the Rev. Jonathan Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may join the family for visitation from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Harrell & Hill Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 1720 Holland Road.
