In the opening game of the Nansemond River Spring Break Baseball Tournament on Saturday morning, Lakeland easily pounded their way by Landstown, 15-4.

Building off the momentum of Friday night’s 4-1 victory at favored Deep Creek, the Cavaliers came to NR’s diamond barely 12 hours after leaving DC’s field and didn’t miss a beat.

After the Eagles got a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first, Lakeland sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the second.

Seth Potter’s single, Colt Eason’s walk, Jason West’s single and a pair of wild pitches added up to two Lakeland runs, but Landstown seemed ready to get out of the inning at that point.

With two down, David Morean drew a walk, returning things to the top of the Cavalier order.

Then, in a play that looked like the dropped third strike call/non-call in last October’s White Sox/Angels playoff series, Seth Brown struck out, wasn’t sure whether to run, then took off for first, and the Eagle catcher threw the ball into right field.

West scored and Lakeland ended up with runners on second and third.

Another Landstown error brought another Cavalier run in then Daniel Cross had the big hit of the inning, belting a drive high off the centerfield fence for a 2-run double, making it 6-2 Lakeland.

Lakeland hit around again in the fourth, scoring five times, including a two-run homer by Grey Pope that cleared the centerfield fence.

The Cavs scored twice more in the sixth and seventh innings.

Among the offensive leaders, of which there were many for the Cavs, were; Brown, 3-for-6 with two runs scored, Pope, 3-for-4 and on base 4-for-5 times, Seth Potter, 2-for-5 with three runs scored, West, on base 4-of-5 times with two runs scored, and Morean, on base 4-of-5 times with three runs and two RBI.

Lakeland (4-4, 4-3) continues group play in the NR tourney, playing Dinwiddie Monday at 3 p.m. and King’s Fork Tuesday at 3 p.m.
