Deep Creek (5-5 overall, 5-4 Southeastern, last year) at Lakeland (0-10, 0-9) – 7 p.m.
Last meeting – Deep Creek 33, Lakeland 7
Lakeland’s last victory was a 20-0 win over the Hornets on October 23, 2009.
It’ll be the first varsity start for Cavalier junior quarterback Zach Super. Super has speed and athleticism around him with his backs and receivers. Time to get the ball to his teammates, hopefully with lots of space to run, could make Lakeland’s offense dangerous.
The Cavaliers were able to get big plays, running and passing, in preseason scrimmages. Doing the same thing in the first all-out district contest is always a question.
Deep Creek’s gone 5-5 each of the last two seasons. Those Hornet teams loved pounding the ball on the ground as much as possible for long, physical drives that can grow longer as a game progresses.
Wilson (0-1, this season) at Nansemond River (1-9, 1-8) – 7 p.m.
Last meeting – Wilson 26, Nansemond River 0
The Presidents fell 13-0 to Portsmouth rival Norcom to open their season. The Presidents were 4-6 last season, an encouraging season compared to their program’s past, and are striving to make more strides in the Eastern District.
Nansemond River enters the season a year older and a year stronger on its offensive and defensive lines. If the Warrior O-line is improved, they have a great running back to take advantage of it. Senior LaMont Brown has been the main Warrior rusher, and really the main Warrior offense, since his freshman year, having gained more than 3,000 yards in three seasons.
Wilson is led all the way around by receiver/returner/defensive back DerWoun Greene, a senior who’s committed to Virginia Tech.
Nansemond-Suffolk (4-6) at First Flight (1-0, this season) – 7 p.m.
First meeting
The Saints travel to Kill Devil Hills, N.C. for their first game under new head coach Lew Johnston. It’ll be the first live test for a new Saint offense, a new defense and really everything new with Johnston.
First Flight opened its season with a 58-8 win over Cape Hatteras on Aug. 19. The Seahawks went 8-3 and reached the second round of the regional playoffs in North Carolina’s 2A class last season.
