Today is the first day of school for Suffolk Public Schools.

Beginning today, he tutorial ministry of Bethlehem Christian Church, 312 Bute St., will be assisting children grades 1-8 with homework at the church, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5-6 p.m. beginning Sept. 5.

Virginia Cooperative Extension invites all horse owners to an educational horse seminar, 5-8 p.m., at the Suffolk National Guard Armory. The meeting and associated dinner are free; however, pre-registration is required. Call 923-2050 during weekday business hours no later than Sept. 1.

The Obici Chronic Pain Support Group meets the first Tuesday of every month. Today’s meeting will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Obici classrooms C&D, garden level. Heather Kirkpatrick, licensed massage therapist, will talk about managing pain.

The Holland Ruritan Club will be holding a fried chicken barbecue luncheon at the Holland Community House from noon to 2 p.m. Tickets are $7 and are available from Ruritans, or at the door. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be put back into the community.

The Suffolk Department of Parks and Recreation will be hosting the First Annual Suffolk Outdoor Expo, presented by Seaport Marine Services, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at Constant’s Wharf Park and Marina, in conjunction with the 35th Annual National Hunting and Fishing Day.

There will be a big buck competition, as well as duck and turkey calling competitions. There is a $10 fee for each contest.
