Vacant house burns

A vacant house on Wellons Street burned Friday morning, causing firefighters to shut down the street while they put out the fire. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the blaze.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue battled a structure fire in the 200 block of Wellons Street on Friday morning.

The fire in the two-story home was called under control at 10:33 a.m. The home, which had boards on some of the windows, was believed to be vacant, city spokeswoman Debbie George said.

Police closed down the 200 block of Wellons Street between Smith and Wilson streets until the fire was cleared.

The cause is under investigation, George said.
