Jonah Mitchell
CONWAY n Jonah L. “Ike” Mitchell, 80, a native of
Northampton County, died October 2, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Church of Potecasi by the Rev. Melvin Roberts. Burial will be in the Mitchell family cemetery, Potecasi. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Mitchell was a past employee with Jimbo Jumbo Peanut Co., Edenton and also a member of Second Baptist Church of Potecasi.
Survivors include a daughter, Tillie M. Bradley of Conway; sons, Clyde Mitchell of Roanoke Rapids, Chester Mitchell of Edenton, Jonah Mitchell and Melton Mitchell, both of Potecasi, Clifton Mitchell of Woodland, Curtis Mitchell of Potecasi, Alton Mitchell of Conway and Albert Mitchell of Woodland; stepchildren, Emily Deloatch of Potecasi,
Marie W. Blythe of Murfreesboro, Doris Taylor of Potecasi and James “Dickie” Williams of Potecasi; a sister, Sarah Byrum of Flushing, NY; 48 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Nellie Powell
EURE n Nellie Cahoon Powell, 74, a native of Norfolk, Va., died October 2, 2006 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Roger Kiker. Burial was in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to Cool Spring Baptist Church or the Eure Volunteer Fire Department.
Mrs. Powell was a homemaker and a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Madison Powell Sr.; sons, Jeff Powell and Scott Powell, both of Eure; Chris Powell of Winton; sisters, Marie Powell of Eure and Jean Spencer of Columbia; a brother, Earl Cahoon of Chesapeake; and six grandchildren.
James Saunders
WINDSOR n James “Jimmy” Saunders, 70, a native of Bertie County, died October 3, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Douglas Knox. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Walker Funeral Home and other times at his home. Memorial gifts may be made to the Bertie County Rescue Squad.
Saunders worked for Davis IGA as the Meat Department Manager for over 30 years. He was a member of Siloam Baptist Church and served in the US Army.
Survivors include a son, Ken Saunders of Williamston; and two grandchildren.
Alice Erickson
DURHAM n Alice Mitchell Erickson, 84, a native of Aulander, died October 4, 2006 at her residence.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Aulander Cemetery by the Rev. Bob Skeens. The Erickson family will receive friends at the Aulander Baptist Church immediately following the service. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.
Mrs. Erickson was a registered nurse. After moving to Durham, she worked with a tobacco company and served as chairman of the Durham Woman’s Club.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Erickson Sr. of the home; a son, Robert Erickson Jr. of Tappanock, Va.; and grandchildren.
Ayanna Dickerson
FRANKLIN, Va. n Ayanna Shanelle Dickerson, died October 1, 2006 at Southampton Hospital, Franklin, Va.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the homeplace, 744 Boones Bridge Rd., Como. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Survivors include her parents, Genevia Barnes of Plymouth and Laron Kaneif Dickerson of Como; her grandparents, Bob and Wilhemenia Dickerson of Como, and Andrea Barnes of Rocky Mount.
Ellis Weaver Sr.
GATESVILLE n Ellis Henry Weaver Sr., 61, a native of Perquimans County, died October 3, 2006 in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home in Gatesville and other times at the residence.
Weaver retired from Union Camp Corp. and was a member of Woodville Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Wiley Weaver three daughters, Velvet Weaver of Gatesville, Scarlett M. Weaver of Counce, TN and April Peterson of Edenton; two sons, Henry Weaver Jr. of Myrtle Beach, SC and Forrest Weaver of Hobbsville; his mother, Argie Bell Pendricks Weaver of Elizabeth City; a sister, Louise Williams of Elizabeth City; two brothers, Charles Weaver of Hampton, Va., and Bill Weaver of Hertford; and seven grandchildren.
Auvin H. Joyner
RICH SQUARE – Auvin H. Joyner, 84, a native of Bertie County, died September 30, 2006.
Survivors include nieces and a nephew.
The family will gather at the gravesite at the Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery in Roxobel at 2 p.m. Sunday.
