New voter cards mailed

Voters affected by statewide redistricting started receiving new voter information cards in the mail last week.
The cards are being sent in time for the Aug. 23 primaries. Only two precincts in Suffolk — Driver and Ebenezer — are voting in a primary.
People whose representation districts changed must receive a new card because they have the districts listed on them, said Justin Riemer, confidential policy adviser for the State Board of Elections.
Though only two precincts have a primary this month, most voters in Suffolk have changed state Senate districts, Riemer said. Therefore, nearly every registered voter should have received a new card last week or will receive one this week.
“Every time there’s a change, a voter needs a new voter card,” Riemer said.
Driver and Ebenezer will go to the polls Aug. 23 to vote in a Republican primary election for their state Senate nominee. Incumbent Thomas K. Norment Jr. is running against Mark C. Frechette.
But when the redistricting processes for local boroughs and for national representatives are completed, many voters will need to receive another round of cards.
“Hopefully, it’s just one more round, so we don’t confuse voters any more than we have to,” Riemer said. “The code says the voters have to receive them. We’re really just following the code.”
The cards come with an insert that informs voters why they are receiving a new card. Voters with questions should call the number on the insert, Riemer said.
“The inserts have information that we hope is helpful to the voters,” Riemer said. “If they have questions, they should feel free to contact the general registrar or the State Board of Elections.”
