A jury on Wednesday convicted a 41-year-old man who dropped his cellphone near the safe he stole last year.

Alonzo Alexander McKay was found guilty of burglary and grand larceny. The jury recommended a 10-year sentence on each charge.

McKay dropped his cellphone in the pro shop at Riverfront Golf Course in November 2010 when he was stealing a safe.

“The phone was left within inches of where the safe was missing,” said prosecutor George Bruch.

McKay gained access to the pro shop because he worked for the cleaning company, Bruch said. He had a key as well as access to the alarm code.

“The time frame it happened would have been the time frame he would have been cleaning,” Bruch said.

Police traced the cellphone back to McKay to identify him as the suspect.

The judge will impose a sentence on Oct. 6.
