Paul D. Camp Community College has been honored by the Smithfield-Luter Foundation as the first Virginia Community College to receive funding for a full scholarship.

Beginning this fall, the Foundation will provide $12,500 to fund a full two-year scholarship. The scholarship is designated for the children and grandchildren of employees and retirees of Smithfield Foods Inc. and its family of companies who demonstrate financial need.

“Paul D. Camp Community College is proud to be the first community college partner with Smithfield Foods,” college president Paul Conco said. “We are grateful to be involved in a program that recognizes their employees’ service and dedication with a benefit that will impact a future generation of our community and their workforce.”

The Smithfield-Luter Foundation was created in 2002 by Joseph W. Luter III, then president and chairman of Smithfield Foods, to provide educational scholarships to the dependent children and grandchildren of company employees and retirees.

Initially, the partnership was exclusive to Mr. Luter’s alma mater, Wake Forest. Today the Foundation has partnerships with Virginia Tech, Iowa State, Norfolk State, Virginia Union, Johnson and Wales and Fayetteville Universities.

The Paul D. Camp Community College scholarship will be available for fall semester 2011.
