Whaleyville School Board candidate Phyllis Byrum is leading the way in fundraising among the candidates for seats. The two incumbents, James Perkinson and Sharon Harris, didn’t raise or spend any money during July and August.

Candidates for offices had to file campaign finance reports on Monday. The reports show contributions, expenditures, loans and more. For the numbers, see page 7A.

Byrum, who is challenging incumbent Sharon Harris in the Whaleyville borough, took in $715 from 11 donors this reporting period, although none of the individual contributions was more than $100. She also had the largest expenditure – nearly $1,500 for signs and buttons.

Nansemond candidate Thelma Hinton took in slightly more than $1,000. A quarter of the money came from Sen. Fred Quayle. She also took about $620 as an in-kind donation from City Council member Charles Parr Sr. She failed to list what the goods or services were or how she determined their value.

Only one of the School Board candidates – Phyllis Byrum – has taken a loan. She gave herself $1,000 for campaign expenses.

The amounts other candidates raised in July and August were: Diane Foster, not listed; Jim Perkinson, $0; Phyllis Byrum, $715; Sharon Harris, none; Thelma Hinton, $1,021.50; Marion Matthews, $600.

A write-in candidate, Robert L. Barnes, has not submitted a report, even though write-in candidates are required to submit the same documents as those on the ballot, said voter registrar Sharon Thornhill.
