For most of the first two games of the boys volleyball match between Great Bridge and Lakeland, the Cavaliers were forcing their play on the visiting Wildcats.

Lakeland’s defense and hustle was forcing errors and the Cavs were within a few points of going up two games to none.

The last few points of game two, then all of games three and four, shifted to Great Bridge’s attack having the advantage over Lakeland’s digging and diving as the Wildcats won 19-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-15.

Great Bridge completed a season sweep over Lakeland, improving to 11-1 in the Southeastern District. Lakeland, in third place entering Thursday’s slate around the league, is now 9-3.

In the opening game, Great Bridge got its fair share of kills as setter Tim Fitzpatrick was on his way to tallying 51 assists for the match. Lakeland was digging and saving more of the Wildcats’ spikes though and at the end of game one, GB had committed 15 errors to Lakeland’s four.

Lakeland moved in front for good with a run of six points on Alex Brooks’ serve which put the Cavs up 17-13. Russell Carr set for kills by Scott Asbell to make it 23-18, then again for 24-19. A Wildcat spike which went long gave Lakeland its final point. Asbell and Brooks had three kills each in the opening game.

The Wildcats held a lead which was as large as 12-5 early in game two before Lakeland rallied and took the lead at 15-14.

A block by Asbell, followed by a Brooks ace, then a Great Bridge error, made it 22-18. At that point in game two, the error stat was still telling the tale as it was 12-2 in Lakeland’s favor.

With Lakeland three points away from another game in its column, Great Bridge scored seven of the next eight points, with four of the points coming on Cavalier errors.

Once the match was even, Great Bridge showed why it is tied for the top spot in the district. The Wildcats rolled to a 21-6 lead in game three and won it handily.

After Lakeland started with an 8-5 lead in game four, the Wildcats went on a 14-3 run to turn game four into the final game. Over the last two games, the error total was 14 by Lakeland and 12 by Great Bridge. With Great Bridge’s offensive ability, an even number of errors was clearly in the Wildcats’ favor.

For Lakeland, Carr finished with 19 assists. Brooks had 13 kills and four blocks; Asbell added seven kills and three blocks.

Fitzpatrick spread out his side’s attack well as Shane Popelka led Great Bridge with 16 kills.

In the girls’ half of the doubleheader at Lakeland, Great Bridge improved to 10-2 in the district with a 25-5, 25-7, 25-14 win.

Becca Warren led Lakeland with three kills. Kaylyn Chatman and Porshe Garner had two kills each.

The Lady Cavaliers (0-12, 0-12) and Cavaliers (9-3, 9-3) host Deep Creek on Monday starting with the boys match at 5:30 p.m.
