A 27-year-old Suffolk man will spend six years behind bars for possession of cocaine.
A jury on Wednesday convicted Javon Sawyer, of North Forest Oak Lane, for one count of possession of cocaine, said prosecutor Charlotte Purkey. On June 9, he was found guilty of felony escape and giving a false name to law enforcement.
According to Purkey, Officer William Maxwell spotted Sawyer on Finney Avenue in a car that had been reported stolen earlier that morning. When Maxwell tried to stop the car, Sawyer fled first in the car, then came to an abrupt stop and fled on foot, she said.
Police found cocaine on Sawyer when he was caught on foot near the intersection of Lee and Smith streets, Purkey said.
