Republican Presidential Nominee Sen. John McCain is guaranteed to have some backing at tonight’s kickoff of Peanut Fest.
McCain’s 96-year-old mother, Roberta McCain, will be attending tonight’s Shrimp Feast. Also on hand will be McCain’s son, Doug, who lives in Virginia Beach.
“They’re kind of making a special trip to come out here,” said Steve Trent, president of the Suffolk Republican Party. Trent added the McCains’ trip was orchestrated through the Republican National Committee after the Suffolk Republican Party sent an invitation to the campaign.
But, Trent says the McCains will not be there on any official campaign business – just meeting with the people of the city.
“This is a non-political thing,” he said. “She’s not passing out campaign literature or anything else; they are just stopping in route to another event.”
The McCains will be spending approximately half an hour at the Suffolk Republican Party tent, then will be briefly heading to the Shrimp Feast.
