CHESAPEAKE — Nansemond River, Lakeland, and King’s Fork finished out the cross-country season in the Southeastern District tournament meet at Bells Mill Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Western Branch, heavily favored to win next week’s Eastern Region meet, took first place, and had the first-place runner in Blake Theroux. The Bruins also took four out of the top five spots. Western Branch was followed by Grassfield, Hickory, Great Bridge, Oscar Smith, Nansemond River, and King’s Fork in seventh.

The sixth-place Warriors were led by Clay Bonney who finished with a time of 19:38 for 33rd place.

“It wasn’t a personal record, but I ran good,” Bonney said afterwards, “I heard a guy from Lakeland coming out of the woods and King’s Fork was behind me too.”

Shaquille Howard helped pace the Warriors to their sixth-place finish with a time of 20:06 for 34th overall. “It was good, my last career race, I don’t have any regrets.” Howard said after his finish.

King’s Fork’s Michael Babineau finished a place ahead of Howard for 33rd overall with a time of 19:38. The Bulldogs finished with an overall time of 1:52:40 for seventh place.

“I ran pretty well considering the conditions, the team ran well overall and I tried my hardest.” Babineau said after the race.

Lakeland was not eligible to receive a placement because they did not have the minimum amount of runners. Devin Keel had the top time for the Cavaliers with 20:24 for 37th overall.

On the girls’ side, Western Branch continued their district dominance finishing first overall. Lakeland was first out of the Suffolk schools, finishing sixth. Kelsey Smither (35th, 23:25) and Brittany Milteer (36th, 23:33) led Lakeland.

King’s Fork finished eighth, led by Christi Tew with a time of 21:56 to come in 27th. Nansemond River placed ninth, paced by Janel Canon who had a time of 24:33.
