Parks & Rec gets Christmas spirit

Bitter cold temperatures didn’t prevent holiday enthusiasts from attending Suffolk Parks and Recreation’s Grand Illumination Ceremony, sponsored by Sara Lee and Farm Fresh last Friday night in Market Park.
Spectators enjoyed holiday favorites sung by the Nansemond River High School choral group and the Cavalier Singers from Lakeland High as they anxiously awaited the illumination, counted down by Mayor Linda Johnson.
Once the ceremony concluded, members of the Suffolk Youth Advisory Council assisted little ones as they patiently waited to give Santa their Christmas wish lists.
“It’s always wonderful to see so many families come and enjoy the holiday season with us,” Parks and Recreation Director Lakita Frazier said.
The department is also extending the holiday spirit to Suffolk’s less fortunate families.
The Suffolk Youth Advisory Council and the Community Services Initiative have joined Suffolk Parks and Recreation in a food drive that will support the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia.
Items will be accepted until Dec. 11 at all recreation centers and at the Santa House, located in Market Park. The Santa House, a free service, is open from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays through Dec. 20.
