Cold case murder suspect guilty

A jury found a Georgia man guilty of second-degree murder Friday, more than 10 years after the death of Melik Powell.

Dedric Sherrod, of Covington, Ga., was the first person arrested by the Suffolk Police Department’s new cold case investigation team.

Sherrod was convicted of second-degree murder, attempted robbery, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, using a firearm in the commission of a robbery, shoot, stab, cut or wound and conspiracy.

The jury recommended 16 years in prison for the murder charge, and 14 additional years for the other charges. He will be sentenced on Feb. 5.

Powell was 26 years old on Nov. 10, 1998. Sherrod shot Powell as he was attempting to use the pay phone at the White Marsh Plaza Shopping Center.
