Canes keep rolling in Wood Bat nationals

Undefeated: Nansemond River’s Kyle Moore (pictured) and First Baptist’s Josh Henderson are on the undefeated Canes Baseball team in the World Wood Bat Association 17-and-under National Championship tournament currently going on in Marietta, Ga. Canes Baseball went 5-0 and outscored opponents 42-6 in group play Saturday-Wednesday. The playoff part of the tournament goes through Friday.

Three Suffolk youngsters, Josh Henderson, Kyle Moore and Brandon Lowe, continued helping their Canes Baseball clubs to excellent records on Tuesday and Wednesday in the 2011 World Wood Bat Association 17U National Championship in Marietta, Ga.

Henderson and Moore are on the Canes Baseball team that kept its undefeated record rolling to 5-0 with a 10-3 win over Bucky Dent Bandits UCLA on Tuesday and a 10-1 win against the Music City Outlaws Wednesday.

Moore, a rising senior outfielder at Nansemond River, had a double and a run in the game against the Bandits. The Bandits took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The Canes led 10-2 following the fifth inning.

Henderson, a rising senior outfielder for First Baptist, went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run against Music City.

Canes Baseball won its six-team group, with a total run difference of 42-6 in its five games, advancing to the playoff portion of the tournament. Out of 216 teams in the event, 48 go on to the playoffs.

Canes Prospects dropped its first game of the week on Tuesday, losing 10-1 to Houston Kyle Chapman.

They bounced back Wednesday for a 4-0 win over the Utah Baseball Academy. Lowe, a rising senior shortstop at Nansemond River, had a hit, two runs and a stolen base. Utah had a 4-0 record going into the game.

Canes Prospects (3-1-1) could still reach the playoffs as one of the top second-place squads from the 36 groups. The tournament finishes Friday.
