Use gas tax for Route 58 work

The idea of Suffolk taxpayers taking on the cost of widening U.S. 58 to six lanes is one of the worst ideas this city government has ever come up with.
Large highway projects are the responsibility of the federal and state government.
I propose an increase in the state gas tax from 17.5 cents per gallon to 20 cents, with all of the money to be put into the highway trust fund. The trust fund should be used only for highways.
Homeowners do not need any more property tax increases to pay off nice-to-have highway improvement projects.
