A man surrendered about 9:30 p.m. after a standoff with police that lasted more than two hours Tuesday evening.

A SWAT team and a police negotiator were among at least 20 Suffolk police officers in the 2200 block of King’s Fork Road after the man barricaded himself in his house with a gun, city spokeswoman Debbie George said.

Police were called to the scene at about 7:15 p.m. on a report of a domestic disturbance with a subject who possibly had a gun and was threatening his wife, George said.

While police were on the way to the scene, a police dispatcher got another call from the scene and learned that the wife and an adult son had fled the residence and that the man had remained inside.

“We’re considering it a barricade situation,” George said at 9:15 p.m., before the man had surrendered. “We’re working to get the man out of the house.”

George said police had confirmed during the process that the man had a gun.

Police arrived at the scene throughout the incident, some in their personal vehicles, and began suiting up with their SWAT gear. A SWAT truck also arrived at 8:35 p.m. At one point, a police officer saw a silhouette at the back door and saw the door open and shut quickly. Screams from near the scene were heard early in the incident.
