The teenage victim of an accident involving a fire died Thursday.

Austin Carroll, 19, of the 2000 block of Pittmantown Road, died shortly before 3 p.m. at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He had been in the hospital since Tuesday, when he and another person were trying to start a fire in a hole in the yard using gasoline. Carroll caught on fire when the blaze got out of control, according to Suffolk spokeswoman Debbie George.

Carroll suffered serious burns, and was in critical condition until his death Thursday. The fire marshal’s office has ruled the incident an accident, George said.
