SYAA Nationals win district title

The Suffolk Nationals (Suffolk Youth Athletic Association) won the Mustang (ages 9-10) district championship on Saturday in Windsor. Suffolk beat Southampton-Sussex in the finals 9-4 and 9-1 for the championship and a spot into the PONY regional tournament this week in Western Branch.

The SYAA (Suffolk Youth Athletic Association) Suffolk Nationals won the Mustang (ages 9-10) District I championship, going 3-0 to finish the tournament on Saturday in Windsor.

The Nationals went 5-1 for the week, opening up with two victories; a 12-9 win over Smithfield and a 15-9 win over Western Branch White. A 4-3 loss to Southampton-Sussex sent Suffolk into the loser bracket path back to the finals.

Suffolk edged Smithfield 9-8 to get a rematch against Southampton-Sussex.

The Nationals had to beat Southampton-Sussex twice and did so with a 9-4 win and a 9-1 win. The title is the first district championship for an SYAA Mustang team since 2006.

The Suffolk Nationals are Tyler Spencer, Michael Barnes, Noah Honeycutt, Noah Floyd, Gavin Ginn, Adam Briggs, Dionte Brown, Gage Fessette, Cody Anderson, Jon David Norris IV, Rendon Meston, Noah Cross and Thomas Beale. Mike Barns is the head coach and Tom Ginn and Kyle Fessette are assistant coaches.

Suffolk advances to the PONY regional tournament this week at Western Branch. Suffolk meets the Little Creek Nationals in the first regional game Tuesday evening.
