The Youth of America Foundation plans to provide Christmas meals, coats and toys to youths living in public housing in Suffolk.

Youth of America Foundation is a non-profit mentoring program offered to the youth living in housing provided by Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority.

On Thanksgiving, food was prepared by chef Susan Guillory to feed more than 150 children for the holiday. Due to the enormous need, the foundation plans to help on Christmas, too.

The foundation’s co-owners, Alvin and Calvin Almond, also catered Saturday night’s gospel affair at the National Guard Armory.

They will launch their mentoring program at three different public housing sites during the first quarter of the new year. The mentoring program focuses on youth ages 12 to 14 to prepare them for high school success and future endeavors. The youth will be selected based on recommendations made by school counselors, parents and their own accomplishments.

Residents will be notified of acceptance into the program.

Anyone interested in donating items or funds can call 809-1121 or make a check payable to Youth of America Foundation at 1272 Portsmouth Blvd., Suffolk, VA 23434. A tax-exempt receipt will be sent for the current tax year. Grants are also sought.
