There are many friendships that last a lifetime, but Tiffany Jordan and Candace Myrick have one that precedes their birth.

The young women have been in classes together off and on since their parents joined the same Lamaze class 23 years ago. All that came to an end recently when they walked across the stage to receive their bachelor’s degrees from Norfolk State University.

“When my mom was coming out of the hospital, her mom was coming in,” said Myrick, born Nov. 19, 1987.

The two girls grew up near each other in Suffolk, and both attended John F. Kennedy Middle School, where they were in the marching band together.

Their time in band together laid the framework for a strong friendship that would provide them with stability and accountability throughout their coming years.

The two shared many friends throughout high school, were in Future Business Leaders of America and CHROME together, and both graduated with honors.

As life would have it, the girls would both attend Norfolk State University, where they were initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society and Golden Key Honor Society.

“Everyone said we wouldn’t be friends after rooming together, but it worked out,” Jordan said. “We just got along. I say it’s a November thing.”

Their friendship goes beyond their birth month. It goes back to their goals and faith.

“We both want to succeed in life and spent time studying,” Myrick said.

After four years living and studying with each other, “she’s like a sister to me,” Jordan said. “We have our sister fights, but we get mad, and five minutes later we make up.”

The glue that holds them together though is their faith.

“Our goal is please God first, not man,” Myrick said.
