This Martin Luther King Day is set to be a special one.
Just one day after celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, the country will watch as the first African-American president is sworn into office.
And for many in the black community, this makes Martin Luther King even more worthy of praise.
“It just proves to me that Martin Luther King was a great prophet,” said Juanita Hart, at this weekend’s Gospel Explosion. “I think that the two, even though Martin is deceased – they’ve made a huge connection.”
Radio Personality Bill Boykins agreed.
“Martin Luther King predicted this day would happen,” Boykins said. “And its come true. It just so happens that his birthday happens in January along with the inauguration of the President of the United States. It’s a miracle. You get two presents on your birthday. We’ll be doubly blessed to have a black president and Dr. King.”
Helping to Celebrate Martin Luther King Day are the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Macedonia Baptist Church and the Local 2426 Union.
The union held its annual luncheon Saturday at the Local 26 Union Hall.
On Monday, the Zeta Archonettes of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. will host the seventh annual Redeem the Dream Step Show Competition at 1 p.m. at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott and Macedonia Baptist Church will hold a luncheon at 11 a.m. in honor of Martin Luther King.
Hart said she will be celebrating Martin Luther King in great anticipation that is to come.
“It’s very exciting,” Hart said. “And it just gets you geared up and excited for what’s next. It’s like hors d’oeuvres before the meal.”
