Apprentice senior Fred Spratley (Nansemond River) surpassed 1,000 points for his college basketball career last Tuesday by scoring 12 points in Apprentice’s 87-75 win over visiting Southern Virginia. Spratley is the third Builder in the last 20 years to reach 1,000 points.

On Saturday in Miami, Apprentice beat Johnson and Wales 84-65. Spratley led the Builders with 17 points. Eric Ruffin (Lakeland) had 18 points and 10 assists in the Southern Virginia game, then 12 points and six assists versus Johnson and Wales.

For the season for Apprentice (10-11), Eric Joe (Nansemond River) is averaging 16.3 points per game, Ruffin’s averaging 14.6 points per game and Spratley’s averaging 10.7 points per game.

St. Augustine’s freshman Chris Copeland (Lakeland) finished second out of 12 competitors in the high jump at the 2009 Eddie and Joe Smith UNC Indoor Track Classic on Saturday, Jan. 24. Copeland’s best mark of 6-feet-9.75 was tied for first, but Copeland dropped to second on the tiebreaker.

Virginia Tech freshman Keith Ricks (King’s Fork) placed fifth for the Hokies in the 200-meter dash (21.81 seconds) at the Penn State National Invitational last weekend.

Also at Penn State, Norfolk State’s 4×400-meter relay team finished second (3:14.26) and freshman Darryl Brickhouse (Nansemond River) was part of the relay team for the Spartans. The Spartans lost to Kentucky by 0.36 seconds.

Kenny Hart (Nansemond River) was named the USA South Conference’s Rookie of the Week for the sixth time this basketball season. Hart scored 14 points to help Averett (11-8, 4-2) in a conference win against North Carolina Wesleyan.
